Just A Thought | On Rob Granito

Rob, Rob, Rob, man did you make waves.

Not good ones mind you.

Sorry to the dude who took this pic.

In fact, you not only caused problems for you, you may have caused issues for a ton of other people.

I know this is a story that has been circling the net for months now and for the most part, I’ve let my peers at Bleeding Cool report on it.  Frankly, they were there first, they’ve got better stories on Rob then I do, so why dog pile on the guy?

A friend asked me what I thought about the situation.

And then I got to thinking about it.  Which, if you’ve read this column long enough, is usually a bad thing.  Many brain cells die and a lot of steam ends up coming out of my ears.

First of all, let’s be honest with ourselves. The whole copying art and selling it at a convention thing; we’ve all seen it, we all know of artists who do it.

BUT

90% of those people who do that, DO NOT take the credit for the reproductions.  In my experience most of them usually put the “after…” on the credit with the original artists name on it.  When you’re an indy artist, the fact of the matter is that sometimes you gotta eat and doing a recreation of a cover can do that very easily.

The problem?

Rob Granito has possibly poisoned the well for them.

This story has gone far and wide.  There is no escaping it.

So, how many people out there are just going to take a look at something, not look for the credit and just decide that the artist is a stealing douche?

A fair amount.

So not only has Rob stolen from other artists and lied about, he’s now screwed it up for many people who are a little more honest about it.

Not to mention if the actual copyright holders start policing conventions.

Let me take you back a few years.

Remember when you could buy a bootleg of the entire Adam West Batman series. It was a golden age of bootlegs.  But then legal people got involved (and to be fair, completely in the right) and hey they were gone.

There are a number of artists who do sketches and prints at conventions that are completely original drawings of copyrighted characters.  Legally, they are in the wrong unless the have some sort of agreement with the copyright holders but most people turn a blind eye to it.  And really, why not? Working in mainstream comics is kind of the ultimate version of fan fiction, a lot of the artists are doing these to make a few dollars as well as the hope that someone might notice them and hire them on.

Now if copyright holders start cracking down, these guys plus the recreationists may be all out of luck.

As for Mr. Granito, let’s talk for a second Rob.

I’m not going to trash you.  Quite honestly, you did a good enough job of that yourself followed by everyone else going after you.

You know you did wrong, they know you did wrong, I know you did wrong, I doubt anyone would dispute that, including yourself. My kind of feeling is you started with a small lie and it barreled out of control until it was a ton of big lies. It happens, sometimes to the best of us.

I’m also fairly certain that while you probably made a few bucks out of these copy prints, you probably didn’t get rich off of it.

But somewhere in there, I’m also sure that you do love comics and the art form.

Your name is tarnished… and that’s putting it mildly.

But I have an idea how you cans tart to make amends with the comic community.

It’s called The Hero Initiative. It’s an organization dedicated to helping out comic creators with medical bills and such.

Maybe it’d be a good idea to head over and make a donation.

what proof do you have that Mr Rob Granito did anything immoral or wrong? because you are a blind follower of everything the cool kids say and follow the masses? ty templeton and lemarr igle do the same thing and because they are a clique nobody bashes them the way Mr. Granito does. you are ANOTHER young kid obsessed with the comic that is trying to get more attention for your website about cartoons by bashing the top name in comic headlines, MR ROB GRANITO. Mr Granito is the headline in the comics world and the cash cow in the comics world so instead of another article bashing him which is not very original, by the way maybe you should consider doing an article about him with HIS side of the story. i wont be visiting this site again if this is the kind of coverage you provide!

This is easily the most awesome comment we have ever received. Gold star.

So really… what is Rob’s side of the story?

Gee, something tells me Granito & Co penned the scholarly screed above ^^

Dear Comicscartoonfan1979… or whatever your name is… you have a valid point in some ways.  Most of my information is based on what I have read and seen.  It’s called research.  You might want to try it sometime.  For instance, yes, Ty Templeton has made a living based on the work of the animated cartoon…oh wait he was legitimately paid for it by the company that owns those characters.  He also did ORIGINAL work based on that style, not traced work.  He also has done work is completely original both in style and content. Comparing this work to Granito’s “work” is not only unfair but fairly stupid. Normally I would get into the name calling but when in Rome.

Ali Granito, Rob’s wife, is the one posting as either Cartoonfan, Comiccartoonfan or comicfan on various blogs, posing as a fan of Rob. She’s a childcare worker in NY and, as she won’t let the Granito thing go, she looks to have been in on the whole scam from the start. Heck, as Granito himself can’t even draw matchstick men, she may even have been the tracer/swiper herself.
She posted this week – again – on Ty Templeton’s blog. She now seems to have been silenced by people pointing out that the publicist the Granito’s are now hanging with – Josh Hoopes – is a noted conman in the comics world, wanted by the FBI. The Granitos too could become wanted by the law if it is proved they participated in frauds with him ( some noting that their association with Hoopes may not just be recent and that latter years Granito modus operandai – full on hoax claims and armed bodyguard – fit Hoopes MO like a glove)
The community and ultimately the law are going to thwart these clowns at every opportunity.

Just A Thought | Scalped

Pete DeCourcy would have made a pretty good drug dealer.

A year or two ago, it was Christmas time, I was in The Blue Beetle and I was looking for something new to try out.

“Have you read Criminal yet?”

“Well…no…”

Pete looked at me like one looks at a sad child.

“Dude… here.” He handed me the first trade, “Merry Christmas.”

Now while it was a kind Christmas gift on Pete’s part and in reality I believe he had no intention of doing this on purpose, but like many a good drug dealer, the first taste is free.

The rest you pay for.

I fell in love with Criminal and bought the rest of the series and the trades are automatically filed in by pull box when they come out.

Which brings us to two weeks ago.

I walk into the store and Pete already has a stack of trades at the desk waiting for me.

“Here ya go. These are mine. Read them. Bring them back when you are done.”

The trades were for the DC Vertigo series, Scalped.

Now I own the first trade previous to this but had a few issues with it (which I will detail later) and never bothered to follow-up with the subsequent trades.

Man did I miss out.

Scalped is the story of Dashiell Bad Horse, a man who can kick ass and uses nunchucks to get his point across. He has come back to the rez of his childhood and ends up working for local crime boss and tribal council leader Lincoln Red Crow. Red Crow is in the midst of opening up a casino on the rez and Dash has been hired on as the muscle.

Did I mention Dash’s mom, Gina, and Red Crow used to be part of the same protest group for Native rights?

Or the fact that Dash is actually an undercover FBI agent whose boss has a vendetta against both Red Crow and Gina?

Don’t worry about the spoiler’s, this is all in the first issue which if I’m not mistaken, can still be downloaded for free from DC.

Where the series runs the best is the added layers or story and plot that is going on.

But be warned, Scalped is definitely not a cheerful comic. There are moments of humor and laughter but by the end of the High Lonesome and The Gnawing story arcs, you might wonder how much deeper will the desperation of the characters sink.

And while elements of the story are obviously a bit on the fictional side, if you know anything about how life is for many Native’s in our country alone, you know a good chunk of it, sadly, isn’t that far-fetched.

Written by Jason Aaron with art mainly by R.M. Guera (there are some one shot stories here and there throughout the series), Scalped is incredibly well written and while the art took a little while for me to get used to, it fits perfectly the tone of the book.

Characters like Dash and Red Crow aren’t caricatures of Natives on a rez. They feel real. Red Crow for instance is a man who has most assuredly done a lot of horrible things over the years and knows that he will some day have to answer for those things but there is a bit of nobility to the character that despite the fact he’s murdered and destroyed lives and despite the fact that he has benefited from these acts, his greater goal is to help his people.

Dash too is multi faceted. We know he was forced to leave the rez at 13 by his mom sending him away. We know he was a solider in Kosovo and now works for the FBI. But we don’t know exactly why he’s undercover other than it involves his boss finding him in jail in Alabama.

Now what’s my one complaint.

The paper.

R.M. Guera’s style is very heavy on the blacks and on the inks. It fits perfectly for this type of story. Unfortunately the paper that the current run of Scalped trades is printed on is not particularly good and makes the art somewhat murky and at times hard to follow. A book this good deserves an up grade to a better printing. Maybe we will see that if a hard cover is ever announced.

If you’re a fan of crime comics or shows like The Wire or The Sopranos, Scalped is well worth your time to invest in. My only problem with it now is do I wait for better looking printings, do I just buy the next trade or do I buy the whole thing right now?

Comics… they can be as bad as crack I tell you.

*I will be around TCAF Saturday afternoon and will be checking out a number of the artists and panels. If you see me, please feel free to say hi.

Just A Thought | A Whole Lot of Grab-bagging

So right now I’m in the middle of research for something. Can’t really say what because honestly it might fall apart and I’ll be in the corner crying. But I’ve still got to put in some work so unfortunately this week, no huge diatribe about any one particular subject.

Nope you get a crap load of mini diatribes on a bunch of stuff instead.

Who loves you baby?

Holy Crap! Look At Captain Ameri… Mexico?

As previously documented, I’m a big fan of pro wrestling and for pro wrestling fans, our New Years took place on Sunday as it was Wrestlemania. For those of you who don’t watch wrestling, the guy in the semi-Cap costume is Rey Mysterio Jr. Great wrestler with a luchador background (hence the mask, Mexican wrestling is really big into that) and apparently at least a little bit of a comic book fan. Along with the Cap costume from Sunday, Rey has also appeared in costumes based on The Flash, The Joker, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Daredevil and Spider-Man. But look at how awesome that Cap suit is. Even the gloves are awesome.

And for those of you wondering, a number of pro wrestlers are comic book fans. Shane Helms, Christopher Daniels and Kofi Kingston are a few off the top of my head. Kofi and Daniels both tweet rather regularly about their comic reading habits and Daniels has visited the Marvel offices at least twice.

New Green Lantern Trailer Rocks!

Watched the new Green Lantern trailer (available on this very website, convenient eh?) and was finally impressed. The last teaser didn’t really show anything to me that I wanted to see but this four minutes from WonderCon was great. It finally conveyed the idea of the Corps as space cops. Went from “eh… I’ll see it when the Woman wants to see Ryan Reynolds’s abs” to “Have to see close to opening weekend.”

Brightest Day’s Latest Protector Is…

Spoiler Alert!

Have You Read Brightest Day #23?

Cause If You Haven’t…

Okay that’s enough warnings. But I’m proud to say myself and CBD EiC, Pete got one right.

Told you so.

Well sort of. We know Swampy is involved and that Alec Holland has also returned so I guess rendering Alan Moore’s run a Vertigo only storyline…except they also seem to be using the whole various elementals thing (nice to see Firestorm gets that recognition back)..so…continuity…um…

I guess Superboy’s punch did a lot more damage then we thought?

LoEG Out This Summer!

Well.. hopefully. Top Shelf mentioned at C2E2 that the next part of the League of Extraordinary Gentleman entitled 1969, should be hitting this summer. YAY!

Fan Expo’s Fan Appreciation This Weekend & The Spider-Man Musical Has A Saviour

I leave you today with two thoughts. One, a whole whack of the CBD peeps will be at the Fan Appreciation ComicCon at Toronto’s Metro Convention Center. Currently as it stands, I’ll be wandering around as will Pete DeCourcy and CBD’s latest columnist Ed Campbell amongst many others.. Comic Book daily also has a booth (so I’m told) so you might find us hanging out there. Please come by and say hello. And bring cookies. Anyone who brings cookies to the CBD booth and asks for me will be in my good books.

But until then, there is one thing that can fix the Spider-Man musical. George Takei.
