Previously in Grimm Fairy Tales: This is the culmination of the entire Grimm line so there’s a bit more going on here than normal. The big step pushing into this however seems to be a battle of evil triumphing over good, as that is where the “story” starts.

MINUS ONE PLOT

As I said, the story opens on the battlefield as the good guys lose. Thane of Oz has just learned of the loss and is willing to make a sacrifice to prevent The Dark One from taking Earth. In order to do so he releases the Dream Eater using a key that is truly awesome, a magic palm reader with a six inch blade sticking out of the center. The gate also speaks to him, telling him of the sacrifice and that the Dream Eater will be the end of all things.
The major part of the rest of the book just shows us when and where all of the major players are as they realize either what is actually going on or, at the very least, that the end is coming. The only real plot from here out is the appearance of the Dream Eater as he assembles himself out of thin air (which was cool) giving a man a heart attack and then proceeds to his first victim, the Queen of Hearts and her sister, (or maybe sister queens, I’m not sure) who are attached to look like the card. But otherwise the story is rather lacking.

BRUTAL VIOLENCE

The art is really where this book shines, which I kind of expected. Even the mundane stands out. We are given highly detailed pictures with nothing that takes away from any of it. The best sequence though is as the comet that is/becomes the Dream Eater approaches earth and becomes whole. The landscape is marvelous and his body materializing is just plain cool.

BOTTOM LINE: Meh

Just plain meh. There just isn’t any substance to the book, about the only thing we get is that the Dream Eater is a terrifying badass and anyone who isn’t scared of what comes next very much should be. Based on the art alone this could have earned a solid five, but with the price point at six bucks and the utter lack of any real story it barely squeaks by with 2 out of 5 stars.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆
