TELEVISION: Lucas has 50 hours of live-action Star Wars in the can?

Posted on May 27, 2011 by Stephen Schleicher

Sadly, no.  No he doesn’t.  Rumors started to spread earlier this week when George Lucas sat down for an interview with G4′s Attack of the Show, that had many speculating that George Lucas had already shot 50 hours of a Star Wars television show, but shelved it.

We have 50 hours and we’re just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies, a different technology we can use … to make it feasible to shoot the show…When we do figure this problem out it will dramatically affect a lot of movies. Right now it looks like the Star Wars features.

What Lucas really meant to say was he had 50 hours of the Star Wars television series (set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope) written, not filmed.  This is all according to io9.com who called up Lucasfilm PR directly to get it all sorted out.  Of course this is just the thing a PR person WOULD say to throw us all off the scent.

I know a lot of people are turned off by Lucas and Star Wars at the moment, but I absolutely love what is going on in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and if there was another live-action television series on the air, you can bet I’d be sitting on the floor with my bowl of popcorn, giggling like a six year old.

“and if there was another live-action television series on the air, you can bet I’d be sitting on the floor with my bowl of popcorn, giggling like a six year old.”

So basically you’d be acting like me whenever I watch the original trilogy? Or when I read some of the novels? Or when noone is home and I take my action figures down from the shelves and play with them?

Lucas was smart in handing over the writing to someone else for the Clone Wars, Lets hope he does the same for this. His vision is a lot better when filtered through a better writer.

I don’t understand all the hate on George Lucas because of the prequel trilogy. The hate on Jar Jar Binks, that I can understand. They weren’t horrible movies, and they added to the Star Wars canon. Go back and watch the original trilogy with critical eyes. They aren’t as great as everybody seems to think. And, in place of Jar Jar, Lucas inflicted Ewoks upon us. And, in my humble opinion, Lucas redeemed himself (if, indeed, he needed redeeming) with the Clone Wars cartoon show. And, for the love of sanity, he put a grown-up Natalie Portman on the screen and that is no bad thing!

It’s a pity the television show got the axe, it would have been interesting to see what he would have done. I wonder, though, what he was talking about, needing to invent new technologies to make the show practical. I mean, you either have to use video cameras of some sort, or film cameras of some sort, to record the action. You have to either build sets for film the thing blue screen and digitally add sets and backgrounds. I just don’t see how inventing some new kind of technology would change any of that. Maybe old George has just been eating too many “sandwiches” and is now trying to think up some way to hook up his imagination directly to a television screen so he doesn’t have to do any of that messy film-making stuff any more?

Come to think of it, didn’t Godard and Ribera already DO that in their comic “Vagabond of Limbo”?
